Costa Rica with kids
Mid-March 2016. We were counting down with our calendar. Only two more nights to sleep and we would fly to Costa Rica.
Then something happened that really got us nervous. Would our long trip to Costa Rica still get off to a good start? It gave me a bit of a fright.
Costa Rica with kids
The weekend of March 12 we were busy with the final preparations for our trip to Costa Rica. The suitcases were ready, the packing list was slowly crossed off and we only needed to take two pages from our calendar. Then it happened. Our little man got well sick. Fever, pallor and vomiting.
Two days later we would fly so I got really nervous. Would that long flight still work out or would I just be busy with a sick toddler? Could we fly at all?
How am I going to fix it if he just spits up? The nerves were running through my body.
Pura Vida
Until he got out of bed on Monday morning fit as a fiddle and mega happy. By some miracle, on the day of departure, he felt fine again. We had a good breakfast and could leave for Schiphol.
What a relief.
After a long eleven-hour flight, a night's sleep in Panama City and a short one-hour flight to Costa Rica, our trip could really get underway. Pura Vida in Costa Rica.
Crossing the country in three weeks
We had planned our trip so that we would first join a trip to Tortuguera, a nature reserve on the Caribbean coast, and from there get a rental car. This was ideal because it allowed us to be in control. We left every travel day right after breakfast, which was very early because the kids were up really early.
When the howler monkeys and the birds were awake, the oldest thought it was time to get up. Unfortunately that was every day around five thirty. Then we drove to our next destination. If we got tired of driving we would stop for a while and if we wanted to do something nearby we would drive straight there. From the Caribbean coast we traveled inland to the Pacific coast.
On good paved roads where you could drive 80 and on unpaved, bumpy roads where you could not go faster than 20 km per hour. Straight through the jungle, around volcanoes, along lakes, rivers and oceans, through one tunnel and across countless bridges. So we traveled across the country and were able to see and experience all the beautiful places.
Trail of spoiled wildlife
Costa Rica is known for its diverse and incredibly beautiful flora and fauna. We really enjoyed the beautiful nature and the wild animals living there. We are all true nature lovers and love animals.
We could also enjoy. In many places it is advised not to touch or feed the animals. Very logical because they are wild, unpredictable animals and they want to keep them that way. We will never touch them.
In principle it doesn't. Until we had a nose bear walking under our balcony while we were eating a sandwich. Well, then the damage is done quickly. Mr. (or Mrs.) Nosebear got a piece of bread and he liked it so much that the next morning he took his whole family with him. Oops..
A week later, I was unsuspectingly eating some chips by the pool when an iguana looked at me intrusively. I had dropped some crumbs next to my chair and he was preying on them. Quite striking because most iguanas were quite timid. This iguana, however, wanted more of those crumbs. And yes, when you look at me so penetratingly, I can't help it if something accidentally falls.
So herewith I apologize, for the people who have somewhat intrusive wildlife next to them after me in the hotels in question. I did it!
It was fantastic here
To close with the well-known slogan of a certain vacation man. It is (was) fantastic here! Costa Rica is highly recommended if you want to take a far away trip with your kids.
