Sony’s Playstation VR for kids

Sony’s Playstation VR for kids?

Guest blog; Run, jump, race, fly, scare, bang, and all at home on the couch with glasses on your head. Okay, now if you think this is Fulltime Mom.what is this about? Stay tuned, you're still on the right page.

On October 13 there will be a cool addition to the Playstation 4 out. Something many (older) children will probably find very nice. But is that Playstation VR suitable for kids?

Sony’s Playstation VR for kids?

Let me first introduce myself. I'm Jeroen, CMD student, full time marketing & Communications intern and gadget/games enthusiast. Besides that I can call Bianca, my big sister for 22 years now.

And since she knows me pretty well, she had to think of me right away when she received an invitation to an introduction to Sony's PlayStation VR (Virtual Reality). An opportunity I obviously could not pass up.

Right; Jeroen

Bouncing to the A-lab

I was immediately excited and so a few days later I was on the guest list for a play session at A-Lab Amsterdam. I jumped in the car straight from my internship and in no time I was in the PlayStation VR playground of the Netherlands. After a cold drink and brief introduction, I got to experience why Virtual Reality is the future.

With goggles on, I got to work.

Suitable for children?

The first demo was immediately something that would also be really great for kids. At least the kid in me was amazed by the world I found myself in. In this intro, you, the player, were immersed in a shark cage underwater. Slowly descending towards the depths of the sea. Along the way you'll enjoy a beautiful underwater landscape with turtles and coral on the surface, to a dark abyss lit up by beautiful neon-colored jellyfish.

Then you come to a mysterious wreck and are surprised by a white shark that clearly mistakes you for a snack in a metal container. I immediately noticed here how quickly you're completely immersed in the demo because of the ambiance being built up. You think you can touch the touchpad of the cage, as well as the fish.

My little nephew would really love this.

Racing in a Ferrari

After escaping death, I jumped from one beautiful setting to another. Indeed, after this I was allowed to virtually sit behind perhaps one of the most beautiful dashboards I can imagine, that of a Ferrari 599 GTO. Driveclub actually supports PlayStation VR and uses this feature to make you feel like you're getting into the car of your dreams. Nice were the little details like opening and closing doors to actually checking your mirrors and leaning along in the turns. Here, however, I noticed the limit of the Playstation.

Where the underwater experience was crisp and finished, Driveclub made you notice that the PSVR does demand quite a bit extra from your PlayStation 4. It was all just a little less sharp and just a little more jagged, however this did not detract from the experience but only left me dreaming of what I want from a razor-sharp VR racing game in the future.

The more intense games

Then I tried some other games including; RIGS, Here They Lie, Untill Dawn: Rush of Blood and London Heist. With these last two games I also got a pair of PlayStation Move's pressed into my hands. These two controllers were registered by the PlayStation Eye at the TV and translated my movements 1-to-1 into the game world. Here the emphasis was mainly on action and shooting, for example, in the car next to a London criminal I could open the door by reaching for the handle or grab a beer from the dasboard compartment and give it to my bald cranky partner.

Something I enjoyed immensely because of all the little details hidden in them. But obviously not a game best suited for a younger audience.

Fun in the virtual sandbox

Fortunately, in addition to the aforementioned wonderful underwater demo, there is also The Playroom VR with all sorts of fun mini-games and a sort of sandbox experience that is also great for kids. But secretly I liked this one too. An added dimension to this was that there were games where you could play together. Three men on the couch and one with the VR headset on.

Unfortunately I have not seen whether these were also to play here but it is certainly worth mentioning.

Nice addition

In short PlayStation VR is a fun addition to your PS4, especially with the varying range of games available. I certainly expect a lot of fun and creative games to be announced after the release on Oct. 13. I also secretly hope something along the lines of a great underwater adventure or a dino safari comes out, because I can't wait to have my nephew experience something like that!

Have your kids gotten into gaming as well?
